...It seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to
sudden destruction... 48:15
...it seemed to me as if I had been rescued from hell...
1T 31; LS 161
Thick darkness gathered around me and it seemed
to me for a while as if I were doomed... 48:15
Total darkness settled upon me and there seemed
no way out of the shadows... 1T 25; LS 153
I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head... 48:16
I dreamed of seeing...one immense pillar...and to
this was tied a lamb all mangled and bleeding... Just before the
lamb were elevated seats upon which sat a company of people... The light
of heaven seemed to shine..“. 1T 27; LS 155
NOTE: The description of "pillars," "elevated seats,"
"light," and a "lamb" tied to a "pillar" are
all elements of the secret temple ceremonies of the mormon cult.
When I came to myself again, I found myself lying
on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light departed I had no strength:
But recovering in some degree I went home... 48:20
While I was lying helpless there, scenes of
beauty and glory passed before me, and I seemed to have reached the safety
and peace of heaven. At last my strength returned and I arose... 1T
29; LS 157
And as I leaned upon the fireplace, Mother inquired what
the matter was. I replied, "Never mind, all is well--I am well enough
off“. I then said to my mother... 48:20
I now confided all my sorrows and perplexities to my
mother. She tenderly sympathized with and encouraged me... LS 157
...I took occasion to give him an account of the vision
which I had had...he treated my communication...with great contempt,
saying it was all of the devil... 48:21
...I felt forbidden to relate my vision in such company...
They denounced my visions as being of the devil... LS 229;231
In consequence of these things, I often felt condemned
for my weaknesses and imperfections; when, on the evening of the above-mentioned
21st of September after I had retired to my bed for the night I betook
myself to prayer and supplications to the Almighty God for forgiveness of
all my sins... 50:29
...words of condemnation rang in my ears day and
night, and my constant cry to God was, "What shall I do to be saved?"...Sometimes
for a whole night I would not dare to close my eyes, but would...kneel
upon the floor, praying silently... 1T 23,26

God had a work for me... PGP 51:33
God has given me a work... 5T 19
It has gone abroad that I proclaimed myself no longer a prophet.
I said it last Sabbath ironically: I supposed you would all understand. It
was not that I would renounce the idea of being a prophet, but I had no
disposition of proclaiming myself such. V5:516
...I accepted an invitation to see Judge Pope in his
room, and spent an hour in conversation with his honor, in which I
explained to him that I did not profess to be a prophet any more
than every man ought to who professes to be a preacher of righteousness;
and that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. V5:231,232
I am not, as I said yesterday Sabbath, a prophet.
I do not claim to be a leader. I simply claim to be simply a messenger of
God, and that is all I have ever claimed. (Statement made Oct. 1, 1904 at
Battle Creek Tabernacle; quoted in The Blue Book, pp. 11,12,
Charles Stewart)
Why have I not claimed to be a prophet?--Because
in these days many who boldly claim that they are prophets are a reproach
to the cause of Christ; and because my work includes much more than the
word "prophet" signifies. Review and Herald, Jul. 26,
1907
And, behold, they will publish this, and Satan
will harden the hearts of the people to stir them up to anger
against you, that they will not believe my words. Thus Satan
thinketh to over power your testimony in this generation, that the
work may not come forth in this generation. DC 10:32,33
It was the spirit of Satan expressed in looks and
words to make of none effect the Testimonies of the Spirit of God.
... And while it is called to-day, if you hear his voice, harden not
your hearts, as in the provocation in the wilderness. Special
Testimony to the Battle Creek Church, 9.
...I also had the spirit of prophecy... PGP 56:73
...the Lord has manifested Himself through the spirit
of prophecy... 5T 64
Our minds being now enlightened, we began to have the
Scripture laid open to our understandings, and the true meaning and
intention of the more mysterious passages revealed unto us in a manner
which we never could attain to previously, nor ever before thought of...
PGP 57:74
...when the brethren who had assembled for study came to
a point where they could go no further, and had recourse to earnest prayer,
the Spirit of God would rest upon. I would be taken off in vision and be
instructed in regard to the relation of Scripture to Scripture. Review
and Herald, June 14, 1906
I answered that I must join none of them, for they were
all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds
were an abomination in his sight; and that these professors were all
corrupt; that: "they draw near me with their lips but their hearts
are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men..“.
PGP 48:17-20
I was shown the necessity of those who believe that we
are having the last message of mercy, being separate from those who are
daily imbibing new errors. I saw that neither young nor old should attend
their meetings; for it is wrong to thus encourage them while they teach
error that is a deadly poison to the soul and teach for doctrines the
commandments of men. Early Writings, p. 124
...the Book of Mormon...contains the truth and
the word of God. DC 19:26
...In my books, the truth is stated, barricaded
by a "Thus saith the Lord“. Letter, March 6, 1906
And then thou deliveredst up that which God had given
thee sight and power to translate, thou deliveredst up that which is sacred...

The Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2
E. G. White 1877
[67] Christ virtually says, On the bank of Jordan the
heavens were opened before me, and the Spirit descended like a dove upon
me. That scene at Jordan was but a token to evidence that I was the Son of
God. If you believe in me as such, your faith shall be quickened, and you
shall see that the heavens will be opened, and shall never be closed. I
have opened them for you, and the angels of God, that are united with me
in the reconciliation between earth and Heaven, uniting the believers on
earth with the Father above, will be ascending, bearing the prayers of the
needy and distressed from the earth to the Father above, and descending,
bringing blessings. . . for the children of men.
The angels of God are ever moving up and down from earth
to Heaven, and from Heaven to earth. All the miracles of Christ performed
for the afflicted and suffering were, by the power of God, through the
ministrations of angels. Christ condescended to take humanity, and thus he
unites his interests with the fallen sons and daughters of Adam here below,
while his divinity grasps the throne of God. And thus Christ opens the
communication of man with God, and God with man.
The Life of Christ
William Hanna 1863
[108] You have heard ... on the banks of the river, the
heavens opened for a moment above my head, and the Spirit was seen coming
down like a dove upon me. That was but a sign. Believe what that sign was
meant to confirm; believe in me as the Lamb of God, the Saviour of the
world, the baptizer with the Holy Ghost, and your eye of faith shall be
quickened, and you shall see those heavens standing continually open above
my head-opened by me for you; and the angels of God ... that carry on the
blessed ministry of reconciliation between earth and heaven, between ...
believers below and the heavenly Father above... going up and bringing
blessings innumerable down, ascending and descending upon the Son of
man.... You shall see me in that ladder of all gracious communication
between earth and heaven, my humanity fixing firmly the one end of that
ladder on earth, in my divinity the other end of that ladder lost amid the
splendors of the throne.
The Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2
E. G. White 1877
[343] The Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated to
commemorate the time when the Hebrews dwelt in tents during their sojourn
in the wilderness. While this great festival lasted, the people were
required to leave their houses and live in booths made of green branches
of pine or myrtle. These leafy structures were sometimes erected on the
tops of the houses, and in the streets, but oftener outside the walls of
the city, in the valleys and along the hillsides. Scattered about in every
direction, these green camps presented a very picturesque appearance.
[344] The feast lasted one week, and during all that
time the temple was a festal scene of great rejoicing.
Night Scenes in the Bible
Daniel March 1868-1870
[363] For seven successive days Jerusalem was crowded by
thousands of the faithful in Israel . .. They lived in booths or
tabernacles of green boughs built upon the housetops, in the streets and
public squares, m the courts of the temple and of private houses, and all
up and down the valleys and hillsides beyond the walls of the city. The
whole of Mount Zion... was so thickly shaded with green boughs as to seem
in the distance like a forest of palm and pine, of olive and of myrtle.
Seven days were consecrated....
The Desire of Ages
Ellen G. White 1898
[23] So Christ set up His tabernacle in the midst of our
human encampment. He pitched His tent by the side of the tents of men,
that He might dwell among us, and make us familiar with His divine
character and life.
The Great Teacher
John Harris 1836, (1870 ea.)
[90] He came and set up his tabernacle in the midst of
the human encampment, pitched his tent side by side with our tents, to
attest the presence of God, to make us familiar with his character, and
sensible of his love.
The Desire of Ages
Ellen G. White 1898
[83] It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour
each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point
by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing
ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our confidence m
Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be
more deeply imbued with His spirit.
Walks and Homes of Jesus
Daniel March 1856
[313] Nevertheless it will do us all good, frequently
and solemnly to review the closing scenes In the Saviour's earthly life....
We shall learn many salutary lessons, by going back in memory, and
spending a thoughtful hour, in the endeavor to strengthen our faith and
quicken our love at the foot of the cross.
The Desire of Ages
Ellen G. White 1898
[142] "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye
shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon
the Son of man“.
Here Christ virtually says, On the bank of the Jordan
the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended like a dove upon Me.
That scene was but a token that I am the Son of God. If you believe on Me
as such, your faith shall be quickened. You shall see that the heavens are
opened, and are never to be closed. I have opened them to you. The angels
of God are ascending..
and descending, bringing blessing and hope, courage,
help, and life, to the children of men....
[143] In taking upon Himself humanity, our Saviour
unites His interests with those of the fallen sons and daughters of Adam,
while through His divinity He grasps the throne of God. And thus Christ is
the medium of communication of men with God, and of God with men.
The Life of Christ
William Hanna 1863
[108] "Verily, verily I say unto you, hereafter, or
rather from this time forward, ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of
God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. You have heard, that a
few weeks ago on the banks of the river, the heavens opened for a moment
above my head, and the Spirit was seen coming down like a dove upon me.
That was but a sign. Believe what that sign was meant to confirm; believe
in me as the Lamb of God, the Saviour of the world, the baptizer with the
Holy Ghost, and your eye of faith shall be quickened, and you shall see
those heavens standing continually open above my head-opened by me for you;
and the angels of God-all beings and things that carry on the blessed
ministry of reconciliation between earth and heaven . . . ascending and
descending upon the Son of man .... You shall see me in that ladder of all
gracious communication between earth and heaven, my humanity fixing firmly
the one end of that ladder on earth, in my divinity the other end of that
ladder lost amid the spendors of the throne“.

The Christian Experience of William E. Foy (1845)
All the angels that are commissioned to visit the earth hold
a golden card, which they present to the angels at the gates of the
city as they pass in and out. (pp. 37, 39)
I then beheld countless millions of shining ones coming
with cards in their hands. These shining ones became our guides.
The cards, they bore shone above the brightness of the sun; and
they placed them in our hands but the name of them I could not read. (pp.
10, 11)
On either side of the chariot were wings, and beneath it
wheels. And as the chariot rolled upwards, the wheels cried Holy, and the wings
as they moved, cried Holy, and the retinue of Holy Angels around the
cloud cried Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. (p. 35)
There were countless millions of bright angels, whose
wings were like pure gold, and they sang with loud voices, while their wings
cried, holy. (p. 18)
And as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels
cried, "Holy," and the wings, as they moved, cried, "Holy,"
and the retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, "Holy, holy,
holy, Lord God Almighty!" Maranatha, p. 305
Behind the angel I beheld countless millions of bright
chariots. Each chariot had four wings like flaming fire and an angel
followed after the chariot, and the wings of the chariot, and the wings
of the angel cried as one voice saying "holy“. (p. 18)
On one side of the river was a trunk of a tree, and a
trunk on the other side of the river, both of pure, transparent gold...
Its branches bowed to the place where we stood, and the fruit was glorious;
it looked like gold mixed with silver. (p. 17)
I then beheld in the middle of this boundless place a
tree, the body of which was like unto transparent glass, and the
limbs were like transparent gold, extending all over this boundless
place...the fruit appeared like clusters of grapes in pictures of pure gold.
(pp. 14,15)
I asked Jesus to let me eat of the fruit. He said:
"Not now. Those who eat of the fruit of this land go back to earth
no more... (pp. 19, 20)
With a lovely voice the guide spoke to me and said,
"Those who eat of the fruit of this tree return to earth no
more“. (p. 15)
...in His right hand was a sharp sickle; in His left,
a silver trumpet. (p. 16)
Against His breast and across his left hand was
as it were a trumpet of pure silver... (p. 18)
Here on the sea of glass the 144,000 stood in a
perfect square. Some of them had very bright crowns, others not
so bright. ... And they were all clothed with a glorious white mantle
from their shoulders to their feet. (p. 11)
I then saw in midst of the place an innumerable
multitude, arrayed in white raiment, standing in a perfect square,
having crowns of unfading glory upon their heads. (p. 19)
Jesus raised his mighty glorious arm, laid hold of
the pearly gate and swung it back on its glittering hinges, and said
to us, You have washed your robes in my blood, stood stiffly for my truth,
enter in. We all marched in and felt we had a perfect right in the City.(p.
11)
Before the gate stood a tall and mighty angel clothed in
raiment pure and white; his eyes were like flaming fire, and his he wore a
crown upon his head which lighted up this boundless plain. The angel raised
his right hand, and laid hold upon the gate and opened it; and as it
rolled upon its glittering hinges, he cried with a loud voice to the
heavenly host, "Your all welcome!" Then the guardian angels in
the midst of the saints struck a song of triumph, and the saints, both
great and small sang with loud voices and passed within the gate... (p.
